Narrative:
Turned east on taxiway C off taxiway Q and was cut off by air carrier Y pushing back tail east onto taxiway C. When we told ground that we were holding nose-to-nose with air carrier Y, he told us to taxi forward to taxiway P and go to taxiway B and to expedite. I taxied forward looking through the tug's lights and turned right onto what I thought was taxiway P. I was on it when I realized it was a roadway! I stopped, but it soon became apparent that a B747 clearing runway 25R was unable to clear the runway with us in our position. There was an aircraft in position on runway 25R, so we were having a definite impact on lax operations. I saw that if I proceeded further on the roadway, I would be able to reach taxiway B and get out of the B747's way. I could see no traffic, objects or taxi lights to stop our progress, so I went. We did not hit, touch, or affect anything as we crossed over to taxiway B. (An hour later, an operation vehicle checked the area and found no damage.) we taxied to our gate uneventfully and called the tower. He said 'no harm, no foul.' got to be more careful taxiing!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A COMMERCIAL FIXED WING LTT TAXIING IN THE TERMINAL GATE AREA INADVERTENTLY TAXIED ONTO A ROADWAY WHEN CONFRONTED WITH RAMP CONGESTION.
Narrative: TURNED E ON TXWY C OFF TXWY Q AND WAS CUT OFF BY ACR Y PUSHING BACK TAIL E ONTO TXWY C. WHEN WE TOLD GND THAT WE WERE HOLDING NOSE-TO-NOSE WITH ACR Y, HE TOLD US TO TAXI FORWARD TO TXWY P AND GO TO TXWY B AND TO EXPEDITE. I TAXIED FORWARD LOOKING THROUGH THE TUG'S LIGHTS AND TURNED R ONTO WHAT I THOUGHT WAS TXWY P. I WAS ON IT WHEN I REALIZED IT WAS A ROADWAY! I STOPPED, BUT IT SOON BECAME APPARENT THAT A B747 CLRING RWY 25R WAS UNABLE TO CLR THE RWY WITH US IN OUR POS. THERE WAS AN ACFT IN POS ON RWY 25R, SO WE WERE HAVING A DEFINITE IMPACT ON LAX OPS. I SAW THAT IF I PROCEEDED FURTHER ON THE ROADWAY, I WOULD BE ABLE TO REACH TXWY B AND GET OUT OF THE B747'S WAY. I COULD SEE NO TFC, OBJECTS OR TAXI LIGHTS TO STOP OUR PROGRESS, SO I WENT. WE DID NOT HIT, TOUCH, OR AFFECT ANYTHING AS WE CROSSED OVER TO TXWY B. (AN HR LATER, AN OP VEHICLE CHKED THE AREA AND FOUND NO DAMAGE.) WE TAXIED TO OUR GATE UNEVENTFULLY AND CALLED THE TWR. HE SAID 'NO HARM, NO FOUL.' GOT TO BE MORE CAREFUL TAXIING!
