Narrative:
My student was on a solo cross country from joplin, mo (jln) to bartelsville, ok (bvo) to tulsa, ok (tul) and return. While flying from bvo to tul, he was vectored on a heading of 180 degrees at 3000 ft MSL. He was then told to fly a heading of 120 degrees and descend to 2500 ft. When asked if he had the airport in sight he responded he did, and was cleared to land. This heading put his airplane towards runway 8, which was closed. He landed on this closed runway and when he encountered barricades, he skidded the airplane in the grass and bent the nose gear. The tower never noticed that he was landing on a closed runway until he was already on the runway. There were no X's on the runway either. I made the mistake of not checking NOTAMS and briefing the student on the closed runway. I believe all of these things contributed to the incident.

Title: STUDENT PLT OF A PIPER PA28-181 ON A SOLO XCOUNTRY FLT, LOST CTL OF THE ACFT DURING LNDG ON A CLOSED RWY AFTER OBSERVING BARRICADES ACROSS THE RWY AND TURNED THE ACFT TO AVOID THEM. THE ACFT WENT INTO A SKID AND WENT OFF THE SIDE OF THE RWY AND ACROSS A TXWY ONTO A GRASSY MIDFIELD AREA. THE NOSE GEAR WAS DAMAGED DURING THE RWY EXCURSION.

WHILE FLYING FROM BVO TO TUL, HE WAS VECTORED ON A HDG OF 180 DEGS AT 3000 FT MSL. HE WAS THEN TOLD TO FLY A HDG OF 120 DEGS AND DSND TO 2500 FT. WHEN ASKED IF HE HAD THE ARPT IN SIGHT HE RESPONDED HE DID, AND WAS CLRED TO LAND. THIS HDG PUT HIS AIRPLANE TOWARDS RWY 8, WHICH WAS CLOSED. HE LANDED ON THIS CLOSED RWY AND WHEN HE ENCOUNTERED BARRICADES, HE SKIDDED THE AIRPLANE IN THE GRASS AND BENT THE NOSE GEAR. THE TWR NEVER NOTICED THAT HE WAS LNDG ON A CLOSED RWY UNTIL HE WAS ALREADY ON THE RWY. THERE WERE NO X'S ON THE RWY EITHER. I MADE THE MISTAKE OF NOT CHKING NOTAMS AND BRIEFING THE STUDENT ON THE CLOSED RWY. I BELIEVE ALL OF THESE THINGS CONTRIBUTED TO THE INCIDENT.
