Narrative:
Cleared for a visual approach to runway 35L at den. On a modified right base, approaching final at about a 50 degree angle. Captain was flying, descending at a normal airspeed and rate. We both fixated on runway 35R, thinking it was runway 35L. We had a GS indication on our ADI's with both ILS's tuned correctly to runway 35L. As we approached the final for runway 35R, both of us noticed at the same time that we had no localizer intercept and then we both saw runway 35L and started correcting to intercept the final for runway 35L. Just then, the tower controller said 'low altitude alert, climb immediately to 7000 ft.' we were at about 6000 ft at the time. Causes: poor situational awareness, complacency, a very poor showing with no excuses at all. Could have been fatal at another airport. P.south. We never got close enough to get a GPWS warning but I'm sure we were in the vicinity
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B727 MADE A VISUAL APCH TO THE WRONG PARALLEL RWY. THEY CAUGHT THEIR MISTAKE AND TURNED AWAY FOR THE OTHER RWY. AT THE SAME TIME, THE TWR CTLR CONTACTED RPTR TO ISSUE A LOW ALT ALERT FOR HIS ACFT.
Narrative: CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 35L AT DEN. ON A MODIFIED R BASE, APCHING FINAL AT ABOUT A 50 DEG ANGLE. CAPT WAS FLYING, DSNDING AT A NORMAL AIRSPD AND RATE. WE BOTH FIXATED ON RWY 35R, THINKING IT WAS RWY 35L. WE HAD A GS INDICATION ON OUR ADI'S WITH BOTH ILS'S TUNED CORRECTLY TO RWY 35L. AS WE APCHED THE FINAL FOR RWY 35R, BOTH OF US NOTICED AT THE SAME TIME THAT WE HAD NO LOC INTERCEPT AND THEN WE BOTH SAW RWY 35L AND STARTED CORRECTING TO INTERCEPT THE FINAL FOR RWY 35L. JUST THEN, THE TWR CTLR SAID 'LOW ALT ALERT, CLB IMMEDIATELY TO 7000 FT.' WE WERE AT ABOUT 6000 FT AT THE TIME. CAUSES: POOR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS, COMPLACENCY, A VERY POOR SHOWING WITH NO EXCUSES AT ALL. COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL AT ANOTHER ARPT. P.S. WE NEVER GOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO GET A GPWS WARNING BUT I'M SURE WE WERE IN THE VICINITY
