Narrative:
On flight from columbus to atlanta, with clearance to FL310, aircraft was allowed to climb to approximately FL316. Center advised we turn and correct back to altitude. Aircraft was a B727 with autoplt but not automatic altitude capture. Altitude alerter was in low volume mode and alert light was dimmed.

Title: B727 CREW OVERSHOT THEIR ASSIGNED ALT BY 600 FT.
Narrative: ON FLT FROM COLUMBUS TO ATLANTA, WITH CLRNC TO FL310, ACFT WAS ALLOWED TO CLB TO APPROX FL316. CTR ADVISED WE TURN AND CORRECT BACK TO ALT. ACFT WAS A B727 WITH AUTOPLT BUT NOT AUTO ALT CAPTURE. ALT ALERTER WAS IN LOW VOLUME MODE AND ALERT LIGHT WAS DIMMED.
