Narrative:

Problem was my not monitoring the first officer's flying more closely. Aircraft was on autoplt control wheel steering, but for some reason, first officer was increasing rate of climb as aircraft approached 9000 ft. I was looking in my brain bag and felt aircraft load up. I looked at instruments as we passed 9000 ft and aircraft vsi was pegged up. Autoplt had acquired assigned altitude of 10000 ft but first officer induced rate of climb exceeded ability of autoplt to level at 10000 ft. Aircraft went momentarily to 10300 ft. I will be discussing first officer's instrument abilities with management further.

Title: FO OF AN MLG OVERSHOT ALT DURING DEP CLB DUE TO A VERY HIGH RATE OF CLB DURING THE LAST 1000 FT TO GO. THE CAPT WAS STARTLED BY THE FO'S FLYING TECHNIQUE AND ASSURED THAT THE CLB WAS ARRESTED AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE.

Narrative: PROB WAS MY NOT MONITORING THE FO'S FLYING MORE CLOSELY. ACFT WAS ON AUTOPLT CTL WHEEL STEERING, BUT FOR SOME REASON, FO WAS INCREASING RATE OF CLB AS ACFT APCHED 9000 FT. I WAS LOOKING IN MY BRAIN BAG AND FELT ACFT LOAD UP. I LOOKED AT INSTS AS WE PASSED 9000 FT AND ACFT VSI WAS PEGGED UP. AUTOPLT HAD ACQUIRED ASSIGNED ALT OF 10000 FT BUT FO INDUCED RATE OF CLB EXCEEDED ABILITY OF AUTOPLT TO LEVEL AT 10000 FT. ACFT WENT MOMENTARILY TO 10300 FT. I WILL BE DISCUSSING FO'S INST ABILITIES WITH MGMNT FURTHER.
