Narrative:
On descent into slc on the brigham city 1 arrival, flight cleared to cross cartr at 15000 ft (landing south). First officer flying and captain on radio. Captain thought approach control gave altimeter setting of 29.63 when given clearance to cross cartr at 15000 ft. Captain read back altitude (15000 ft) and altimeter setting of 29.63. Before leveling at 15000 ft, approach gave us a vector and descent to 12000 ft. Upon reaching 12000 ft approach control said, 'air carrier X, descend to 12000 ft.' captain stated, 'air carrier X level 12000 ft.' approach control said again, 'air carrier X descend to 12000 ft.' captain then asked for current altimeter setting. Approach control stated, ' 30.63, are you descending to 12000 ft, air carrier X?' captain stated, 'air carrier X in descent to 12000 ft.' no traffic conflicts noted. VMC at all times during this sequence of events.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B757 UNDERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT ON STAR ARR DUE TO COPYING AND SETTING THE WRONG ALTIMETER SETTING PROVIDED BY APCH CTL. ONLY AFTER APCH CTLR INTERVENED AND REQUESTED RPTRS TO DSND TO ASSIGNED DID THE CAPT FINALLY RECHK ALTIMETER SETTING SINCE HE BELIEVED THAT HE WAS AT ASSIGNED.
Narrative: ON DSCNT INTO SLC ON THE BRIGHAM CITY 1 ARR, FLT CLRED TO CROSS CARTR AT 15000 FT (LNDG S). FO FLYING AND CAPT ON RADIO. CAPT THOUGHT APCH CTL GAVE ALTIMETER SETTING OF 29.63 WHEN GIVEN CLRNC TO CROSS CARTR AT 15000 FT. CAPT READ BACK ALT (15000 FT) AND ALTIMETER SETTING OF 29.63. BEFORE LEVELING AT 15000 FT, APCH GAVE US A VECTOR AND DSCNT TO 12000 FT. UPON REACHING 12000 FT APCH CTL SAID, 'ACR X, DSND TO 12000 FT.' CAPT STATED, 'ACR X LEVEL 12000 FT.' APCH CTL SAID AGAIN, 'ACR X DSND TO 12000 FT.' CAPT THEN ASKED FOR CURRENT ALTIMETER SETTING. APCH CTL STATED, ' 30.63, ARE YOU DSNDING TO 12000 FT, ACR X?' CAPT STATED, 'ACR X IN DSCNT TO 12000 FT.' NO TFC CONFLICTS NOTED. VMC AT ALL TIMES DURING THIS SEQUENCE OF EVENTS.
