Narrative:
While climbing on J70, ATC asked us to turn 20 degrees right for traffic. (Current heading of 060 degrees to maintain J70.) captain turned to 080 degrees. Center asked our heading, I replied 045 degrees -- my mistake in reading directional gyro. She (center) asked us to turn to 100 degrees. The captain turned an additional 20 degrees right to a 100 degree heading. (Before I was able to correct my mistake in reading the directional gyro, she gave us the 100 degree heading.) while center and I resolved the miscom, she (center) informed me there was a 'conflict.' all of center's instructions were followed to the letter, I just read off the wrong heading after center asked us to turn 20 degrees right. TCASII was inoperative (MEL).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FO OF AN MLG ADVISED ARTCC RADAR CTLR OF INCORRECT HDG THAT THE CAPT HAD TURNED TO AS INSTRUCTED BY THE CTLR. CONSEQUENTLY, SINCE THE CTLR HAD ISSUED A HDG CHANGE PREVIOUSLY, THE CTLR GAVE AN ADDITIONAL TURN IN, BY DOUBLING THE FIRST, IN ORDER TO ASSURE SEPARATION OF A TFC CONFLICT.
Narrative: WHILE CLBING ON J70, ATC ASKED US TO TURN 20 DEGS R FOR TFC. (CURRENT HDG OF 060 DEGS TO MAINTAIN J70.) CAPT TURNED TO 080 DEGS. CTR ASKED OUR HDG, I REPLIED 045 DEGS -- MY MISTAKE IN READING DIRECTIONAL GYRO. SHE (CTR) ASKED US TO TURN TO 100 DEGS. THE CAPT TURNED AN ADDITIONAL 20 DEGS R TO A 100 DEG HDG. (BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO CORRECT MY MISTAKE IN READING THE DIRECTIONAL GYRO, SHE GAVE US THE 100 DEG HDG.) WHILE CTR AND I RESOLVED THE MISCOM, SHE (CTR) INFORMED ME THERE WAS A 'CONFLICT.' ALL OF CTR'S INSTRUCTIONS WERE FOLLOWED TO THE LETTER, I JUST READ OFF THE WRONG HDG AFTER CTR ASKED US TO TURN 20 DEGS R. TCASII WAS INOP (MEL).
