Narrative:
ATC facility: dfw east tower. Location: 5 mi final to runway 18R dfw. Flight was arriving on the ukw arrival. 10 NM north of ukw, the #1 flight attendant advised the captain of a medical emergency. The captain coordinated with dispatch and cabin. The first officer (myself) was flying. We were anticipating arriving runway 36R. Approach initially did not assign a runway, then runway 17C, finally a visual to runway 17R. Flight visibility was hazy horizontally but not directly downward. All navaids were tuned for runway 17R by 5 mi final. Both pilots mistook runway 18R for runway 17R and lined up on runway 18R. When we were approximately 4 mi from runway 18R the tower advised us that we may be on final for runway 18R. We transitioned to runway 17R and landed runway 17R normally. We believe the haste to get the aircraft to the gate, the workload due to the medical emergency, and the haze all contributed to the error.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF A B757 LINED UP WITH THE WRONG PARALLEL RWY RESULTING IN ATC INTERVENTION TO ADVISE THEM AND DIRECT THEM TO THE ASSIGNED RWY.
Narrative: ATC FACILITY: DFW E TWR. LOCATION: 5 MI FINAL TO RWY 18R DFW. FLT WAS ARRIVING ON THE UKW ARR. 10 NM N OF UKW, THE #1 FLT ATTENDANT ADVISED THE CAPT OF A MEDICAL EMER. THE CAPT COORDINATED WITH DISPATCH AND CABIN. THE FO (MYSELF) WAS FLYING. WE WERE ANTICIPATING ARRIVING RWY 36R. APCH INITIALLY DID NOT ASSIGN A RWY, THEN RWY 17C, FINALLY A VISUAL TO RWY 17R. FLT VISIBILITY WAS HAZY HORIZLY BUT NOT DIRECTLY DOWNWARD. ALL NAVAIDS WERE TUNED FOR RWY 17R BY 5 MI FINAL. BOTH PLTS MISTOOK RWY 18R FOR RWY 17R AND LINED UP ON RWY 18R. WHEN WE WERE APPROX 4 MI FROM RWY 18R THE TWR ADVISED US THAT WE MAY BE ON FINAL FOR RWY 18R. WE TRANSITIONED TO RWY 17R AND LANDED RWY 17R NORMALLY. WE BELIEVE THE HASTE TO GET THE ACFT TO THE GATE, THE WORKLOAD DUE TO THE MEDICAL EMER, AND THE HAZE ALL CONTRIBUTED TO THE ERROR.
