Narrative:
Center controller said, 'descend and maintain FL290 for traffic.' the captain read back, 'air carrier X, FL330 for FL290.' I entered the new altitude in the FMS and pushed the VNAV button to initiate the descent. A few mins later, center asked, 'air carrier X, are you descending to FL290?' we were still level at FL330. I then made an expeditious descent to FL290. I was in conversation with the captain and failed to verify that the aircraft had entered the descent. It is fairly common for the MD88 autoflt system to not respond to inputs on the first try, so increased vigilance is necessary.
