Narrative:
Shortly after passing tul at FL310, ATC issued a clearance to amend altitude to FL290. First officer read back clearance and we began descent. Passing FL298 ATC called and stated 'air carrier xyz, I show you descending. Say altitude.' we verified altitude and advised we were complying with previously issued clearance. ATC told us to turn left 40 degrees and climb back to FL310. There were several aircraft visible on TCASII but no alert was issued. ATC next inquired of one of our company aircraft if he was at FL290. They stated they were still at FL330 and had not been issued a clearance to FL290. Shortly after this we were given a frequency change and proceeded to dfw with no further events. Conditions were daylight with clear skies. Supplemental information from acn 424711: jump seater and captain heard clearance to FL290 clearly. I believe controller confused us with a company aircraft.

Title: AN ARTCC RADAR CTLR APPARENTLY ISSUED A DSCNT CLRNC TO THE WRONG ACFT. THE CTLR MAINTAINED SEPARATION BY USE OF VECTORS AND NEW ALT ASSIGNMENTS.
Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER PASSING TUL AT FL310, ATC ISSUED A CLRNC TO AMEND ALT TO FL290. FO READ BACK CLRNC AND WE BEGAN DSCNT. PASSING FL298 ATC CALLED AND STATED 'ACR XYZ, I SHOW YOU DSNDING. SAY ALT.' WE VERIFIED ALT AND ADVISED WE WERE COMPLYING WITH PREVIOUSLY ISSUED CLRNC. ATC TOLD US TO TURN L 40 DEGS AND CLB BACK TO FL310. THERE WERE SEVERAL ACFT VISIBLE ON TCASII BUT NO ALERT WAS ISSUED. ATC NEXT INQUIRED OF ONE OF OUR COMPANY ACFT IF HE WAS AT FL290. THEY STATED THEY WERE STILL AT FL330 AND HAD NOT BEEN ISSUED A CLRNC TO FL290. SHORTLY AFTER THIS WE WERE GIVEN A FREQ CHANGE AND PROCEEDED TO DFW WITH NO FURTHER EVENTS. CONDITIONS WERE DAYLIGHT WITH CLR SKIES. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 424711: JUMP SEATER AND CAPT HEARD CLRNC TO FL290 CLRLY. I BELIEVE CTLR CONFUSED US WITH A COMPANY ACFT.
