Narrative:
Approach cleared our aircraft for visual approach on runway 36R, 3 times. The captain was flying the aircraft. We were positioned on a 6 mi final for runway 36R. Approach handed us off to tower, but the frequency he gave us was for runway 36L. We contacted tower and tower cleared us to land on runway 36L, the other runway. I immediately questioned the clearance and which runway he wanted us on. During my discussion with tower controller, our TCASII warned of traffic. I looked out the starboard window and located another aircraft at our 2 O'clock position near our altitude and turning right to final on runway 36R. The captain turned left away from the oncoming aircraft. I contacted tower on the other frequency and we were cleared to land on runway 36L, which we did. Better communication between approach and tower controllers would have avoided this problem. Supplemental information from acn 424300: approach had cleared us and another aircraft for approach to the same runway. Distance was not critical so we landed with no problems or abrupt maneuvers on runway 36L.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN NMAC OCCURS WHEN CVG APCH CTLR ASSIGNS 2 ARR ACFT THE SAME RWY.
Narrative: APCH CLRED OUR ACFT FOR VISUAL APCH ON RWY 36R, 3 TIMES. THE CAPT WAS FLYING THE ACFT. WE WERE POSITIONED ON A 6 MI FINAL FOR RWY 36R. APCH HANDED US OFF TO TWR, BUT THE FREQ HE GAVE US WAS FOR RWY 36L. WE CONTACTED TWR AND TWR CLRED US TO LAND ON RWY 36L, THE OTHER RWY. I IMMEDIATELY QUESTIONED THE CLRNC AND WHICH RWY HE WANTED US ON. DURING MY DISCUSSION WITH TWR CTLR, OUR TCASII WARNED OF TFC. I LOOKED OUT THE STARBOARD WINDOW AND LOCATED ANOTHER ACFT AT OUR 2 O'CLOCK POS NEAR OUR ALT AND TURNING R TO FINAL ON RWY 36R. THE CAPT TURNED L AWAY FROM THE ONCOMING ACFT. I CONTACTED TWR ON THE OTHER FREQ AND WE WERE CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 36L, WHICH WE DID. BETTER COM BTWN APCH AND TWR CTLRS WOULD HAVE AVOIDED THIS PROB. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 424300: APCH HAD CLRED US AND ANOTHER ACFT FOR APCH TO THE SAME RWY. DISTANCE WAS NOT CRITICAL SO WE LANDED WITH NO PROBS OR ABRUPT MANEUVERS ON RWY 36L.
