Narrative:
While departing orl on a return flight to tlh, I called ground control and requested a VFR departure to the northwest at 4500 ft. Ground responded with a taxi clearance to runway 25 with no squawk assigned. I taxied out and contacted orl tower who cleared me for takeoff and on course. I took this to mean 'clearance as requested' with ground control and took off and began a climb to 4500 ft. Shortly after leaving 1600 ft, ATC called and advised that I had penetrated class B airspace without a clearance. I immediately descended back to 1500 ft. Maximum altitude attained during the excursion was 1900 ft. I failed to notice that orl tower did not control the airspace in the class B overlying orl. I needed to ask for clearance to enter the class B before entering. I usually fly IFR and am used to getting my clearance before departing. Need to refamiliarize with VFR.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A BE95 PLT CLBS INTO THE CLASS B AIRSPACE ABOVE ORL ARPT WITHOUT GETTING CLRNC FROM MCO APCH CTL.
Narrative: WHILE DEPARTING ORL ON A RETURN FLT TO TLH, I CALLED GND CTL AND REQUESTED A VFR DEP TO THE NW AT 4500 FT. GND RESPONDED WITH A TAXI CLRNC TO RWY 25 WITH NO SQUAWK ASSIGNED. I TAXIED OUT AND CONTACTED ORL TWR WHO CLRED ME FOR TKOF AND ON COURSE. I TOOK THIS TO MEAN 'CLRNC AS REQUESTED' WITH GND CTL AND TOOK OFF AND BEGAN A CLB TO 4500 FT. SHORTLY AFTER LEAVING 1600 FT, ATC CALLED AND ADVISED THAT I HAD PENETRATED CLASS B AIRSPACE WITHOUT A CLRNC. I IMMEDIATELY DSNDED BACK TO 1500 FT. MAX ALT ATTAINED DURING THE EXCURSION WAS 1900 FT. I FAILED TO NOTICE THAT ORL TWR DID NOT CTL THE AIRSPACE IN THE CLASS B OVERLYING ORL. I NEEDED TO ASK FOR CLRNC TO ENTER THE CLASS B BEFORE ENTERING. I USUALLY FLY IFR AND AM USED TO GETTING MY CLRNC BEFORE DEPARTING. NEED TO REFAMILIARIZE WITH VFR.
