Narrative:
After takeoff, center gear would not retract. Aircraft returned to ZZZ and made an uneventful landing. The crew found the center gear pin installed. This aircraft had been in 'B' check at the hangar and the gear pins were installed 2 days earlier for taxi from the line to the hangar. Normally the center pin is not used when maintenance is taxiing. It was reported but unconfirmed that the 'remove before flight' streamer was not attached to the pin. Prior to mar/xa/99, a log entry would have been made in the paper logbook, and the taxi mechanic would have signed for the gear pin removal. After mar/xa/99, this must be done in the computer, so the lead must rely on a radio call from the line to confirm pin removal.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DC10-30 ON TEST FLT AFTER HVY MAINT RETURNED TO THE FIELD DUE TO UNABLE TO RETRACT THE CTR LNDG GEAR CAUSED BY THE FAILURE TO REMOVE THE GEAR LOCK PIN.
Narrative: AFTER TKOF, CTR GEAR WOULD NOT RETRACT. ACFT RETURNED TO ZZZ AND MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. THE CREW FOUND THE CTR GEAR PIN INSTALLED. THIS ACFT HAD BEEN IN 'B' CHK AT THE HANGAR AND THE GEAR PINS WERE INSTALLED 2 DAYS EARLIER FOR TAXI FROM THE LINE TO THE HANGAR. NORMALLY THE CTR PIN IS NOT USED WHEN MAINT IS TAXIING. IT WAS RPTED BUT UNCONFIRMED THAT THE 'REMOVE BEFORE FLT' STREAMER WAS NOT ATTACHED TO THE PIN. PRIOR TO MAR/XA/99, A LOG ENTRY WOULD HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE PAPER LOGBOOK, AND THE TAXI MECH WOULD HAVE SIGNED FOR THE GEAR PIN REMOVAL. AFTER MAR/XA/99, THIS MUST BE DONE IN THE COMPUTER, SO THE LEAD MUST RELY ON A RADIO CALL FROM THE LINE TO CONFIRM PIN REMOVAL.
