Narrative:
I received tower clearance for takeoff with a right downwind departure from lgb runway 25R. After turning ot the crosswind leg at approximately 500 ft altitude, I encountered a previously unnoted high wing aircraft on downwind leg. This aircraft was close below me and I steepened my climb for additional clearance.
