Narrative:
Getting ready to depart gate, ground personnel could not establish communications on headset. We agreed to use hand signals. When ready for pwrback, ramp tower told us to power tail south. This had not been briefed, but I assumed that everyone knew this was standard for a ZZZ departure. As we pwred back, I kept expecting a turn signal which never came. I thought it must be clear behind since we had 3 guidemen on the airplane, and ramp tower probably wouldn't mind. As we neared the center of the ramp, I noticed 1 wingwalker giving rather frantic pull forward signal. As we turned out, we saw an air carrier jet very close behind. Later we learned that the guideman was new at atl.
