Narrative:
While in cruise at FL260, ZAU issued a 'descend to FL240' to what the PNF and PF both heard as 'ncxbnc.' we vacated FL260, and, descending through FL255, were queried on our altitude. We stated that we were descending to FL240, as we had been cleared and read back. Controller told us to return to FL260, and subsequently cleared another aircraft to leave FL260 for FL240. We believe the other aircraft call sign was cbbc. The controller called us to clarify, and we responded that we had heard 'cxbnc, descend to FL240,' that we had read that back, and had then done so. We believe the controller had meant to issue the other aircraft, cbbc, the descent clearance, but had either said the wrong call sign himself, or had not listened for a readback. It did not appear to cause any safety or traffic conflict, by the way.

Title: A CPR JET ACKNOWLEDGES A CLRNC AND LEAVES FL260 WHEN THEY BELIEVE THEIR CALL SIGN WAS USED. CTR CTLR SENDS THEM BACK UP.
Narrative: WHILE IN CRUISE AT FL260, ZAU ISSUED A 'DSND TO FL240' TO WHAT THE PNF AND PF BOTH HEARD AS 'NCXBNC.' WE VACATED FL260, AND, DSNDING THROUGH FL255, WERE QUERIED ON OUR ALT. WE STATED THAT WE WERE DSNDING TO FL240, AS WE HAD BEEN CLRED AND READ BACK. CTLR TOLD US TO RETURN TO FL260, AND SUBSEQUENTLY CLRED ANOTHER ACFT TO LEAVE FL260 FOR FL240. WE BELIEVE THE OTHER ACFT CALL SIGN WAS CBBC. THE CTLR CALLED US TO CLARIFY, AND WE RESPONDED THAT WE HAD HEARD 'CXBNC, DSND TO FL240,' THAT WE HAD READ THAT BACK, AND HAD THEN DONE SO. WE BELIEVE THE CTLR HAD MEANT TO ISSUE THE OTHER ACFT, CBBC, THE DSCNT CLRNC, BUT HAD EITHER SAID THE WRONG CALL SIGN HIMSELF, OR HAD NOT LISTENED FOR A READBACK. IT DID NOT APPEAR TO CAUSE ANY SAFETY OR TFC CONFLICT, BY THE WAY.
