Narrative:
During landing with crosswind at airframe manufacturer limit, engine pods #1 and #4 scraped the ground. No injury. No other aircraft involved. Aircraft damage minimal. Incident reported to tower when evidence of ground contact discovered during postflt inspection. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a DC8-71 cargoliner. The reporter said the aircraft was in a crab and just at touchdown was hit with a strong crosswind gust. The reporter stated at that point he lost it momentarily and struck #1 engine first and in correcting struck #4 engine lower cowling. The reporter said the engine cowling was replaced. The reporter stated the landing was not hard. The reporter said the aircraft has cfm-56 engines which have limited ground clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DC8-71 ON A XWIND LNDG ENCOUNTERED A GUST AT TOUCHDOWN AND STRUCK #1 AND #4 ENGS ON THE RWY INCURRING COWLING DAMAGE.
Narrative: DURING LNDG WITH XWIND AT AIRFRAME MANUFACTURER LIMIT, ENG PODS #1 AND #4 SCRAPED THE GND. NO INJURY. NO OTHER ACFT INVOLVED. ACFT DAMAGE MINIMAL. INCIDENT RPTED TO TWR WHEN EVIDENCE OF GND CONTACT DISCOVERED DURING POSTFLT INSPECTION. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS A DC8-71 CARGOLINER. THE RPTR SAID THE ACFT WAS IN A CRAB AND JUST AT TOUCHDOWN WAS HIT WITH A STRONG XWIND GUST. THE RPTR STATED AT THAT POINT HE LOST IT MOMENTARILY AND STRUCK #1 ENG FIRST AND IN CORRECTING STRUCK #4 ENG LOWER COWLING. THE RPTR SAID THE ENG COWLING WAS REPLACED. THE RPTR STATED THE LNDG WAS NOT HARD. THE RPTR SAID THE ACFT HAS CFM-56 ENGS WHICH HAVE LIMITED GND CLRNC.
