Narrative:
Received clearance to taxi to runway 9R. I heard 'taxi to runway 9L, left on taxiway B, taxiway A10, taxiway T, taxiway M' ground controller was very busy and was talking very fast (a line of showers had just passed, backing up traffic). As we approached taxiway M on taxiway T, I could not see the final for runway 14R, so I made a right turn on taxiway M slowly and stopped. There was traffic on final for runway 14R. Ground had us turn around and go left on taxiway M for a circuitous route to runway 9R. In the process, I may have infringed over the hold short line for runway 14R. Later, my first officer showed me what he had written down for our taxi instructions: 'runway 9R, left on taxiway B, taxiway A10, left on taxiway T, taxiway M.' I believe that the controller was task saturated. He was giving complex taxi instructions rapid fire, which is the perfect set up for missing something. Chicago would benefit from a system to take some burden off of the ground controllers. On the slight chance that we both misunderstood and improperly wrote down the taxi instructions, I believe that the problem still has something to do with overloaded ground controllers giving complex instructions rapidly. Data linked instructions would allow the crew to refer to the clearance as downlinked, rather than as written.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE FLC OF A TWIN JET ACR APPARENTLY CROSSED A RWY HOLD LINE WITHOUT AUTH. AN ALERT GND CTLR HAD THEM TURN AROUND.
Narrative: RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 9R. I HEARD 'TAXI TO RWY 9L, L ON TXWY B, TXWY A10, TXWY T, TXWY M' GND CTLR WAS VERY BUSY AND WAS TALKING VERY FAST (A LINE OF SHOWERS HAD JUST PASSED, BACKING UP TFC). AS WE APCHED TXWY M ON TXWY T, I COULD NOT SEE THE FINAL FOR RWY 14R, SO I MADE A R TURN ON TXWY M SLOWLY AND STOPPED. THERE WAS TFC ON FINAL FOR RWY 14R. GND HAD US TURN AROUND AND GO L ON TXWY M FOR A CIRCUITOUS RTE TO RWY 9R. IN THE PROCESS, I MAY HAVE INFRINGED OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 14R. LATER, MY FO SHOWED ME WHAT HE HAD WRITTEN DOWN FOR OUR TAXI INSTRUCTIONS: 'RWY 9R, L ON TXWY B, TXWY A10, L ON TXWY T, TXWY M.' I BELIEVE THAT THE CTLR WAS TASK SATURATED. HE WAS GIVING COMPLEX TAXI INSTRUCTIONS RAPID FIRE, WHICH IS THE PERFECT SET UP FOR MISSING SOMETHING. CHICAGO WOULD BENEFIT FROM A SYS TO TAKE SOME BURDEN OFF OF THE GND CTLRS. ON THE SLIGHT CHANCE THAT WE BOTH MISUNDERSTOOD AND IMPROPERLY WROTE DOWN THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS, I BELIEVE THAT THE PROB STILL HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH OVERLOADED GND CTLRS GIVING COMPLEX INSTRUCTIONS RAPIDLY. DATA LINKED INSTRUCTIONS WOULD ALLOW THE CREW TO REFER TO THE CLRNC AS DOWNLINKED, RATHER THAN AS WRITTEN.
