Narrative:
We, flight X, were #1 at taxiway eh for runway 17R at dfw. Flight xx was #1 at taxiway ef, as we found out later. Tower cleared flight xx into position and hold. We heard X and read back flight X position and hold runway 17R. The captain nearly had the aircraft lined up for takeoff when xx queried tower regarding the clearance. Tower indicated the clearance was for xx and told xx to hold short and cleared us for takeoff. Obviously, I fell into the similar call sign trap and need to be more attentive in this area. I do believe tower could have corrected the situation by challenging my readback. Also, xx could have been a little more timely in his query.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 CREW ACCEPTED CLRNC INTO POS INTENDED FOR ANOTHER ACFT.
Narrative: WE, FLT X, WERE #1 AT TXWY EH FOR RWY 17R AT DFW. FLT XX WAS #1 AT TXWY EF, AS WE FOUND OUT LATER. TWR CLRED FLT XX INTO POS AND HOLD. WE HEARD X AND READ BACK FLT X POS AND HOLD RWY 17R. THE CAPT NEARLY HAD THE ACFT LINED UP FOR TKOF WHEN XX QUERIED TWR REGARDING THE CLRNC. TWR INDICATED THE CLRNC WAS FOR XX AND TOLD XX TO HOLD SHORT AND CLRED US FOR TKOF. OBVIOUSLY, I FELL INTO THE SIMILAR CALL SIGN TRAP AND NEED TO BE MORE ATTENTIVE IN THIS AREA. I DO BELIEVE TWR COULD HAVE CORRECTED THE SIT BY CHALLENGING MY READBACK. ALSO, XX COULD HAVE BEEN A LITTLE MORE TIMELY IN HIS QUERY.
