Narrative:
Location: 5 mi southeast of love field. Had been using GPS coupled to #1 DFGS to navigation on the arrival into dfw. Approach vectored us off and told us to intercept the runway 31R localizer and expect the stadium visual. We had not expected this since the ATIS said we could expect runway 35R. The first officer was new and had never flown into dfw this way before. As we scrambled to get out the plates, the first officer dialed in the localizer frequency and course (he was the PF) and armed the localizer. I dialed in TTT to identify one of the points on the visual. While we briefed, the aircraft flew through the course because we still had the aircraft on DFGS #1. The controller caught the error and there did not seem to be any conflicts. We could have prevented this by noticing that the flight mode annunciator showed VOR, not localizer, and remembered to switch the DFGS to #2. Supplemental information from acn 434592: during first officer IOE, first officer was PF using GPS with DFGS #1 selected for instructional purposes.
