Narrative:
Clearance from lax clearance delivery was lax 3 departure. We departed, were told to climb to 3000 ft, best forward speed. After switch to socal, socal says to climb to 13000 ft. Reaching the 10 DME fix, I call socal and ask 'cpr X, do you have us or do you want us on the departure route?' socal 'was that cpr X?' 'yes, sir do you want us to follow the departure route?' 'cpr X turn left 210 degrees.' '210 degrees cpr X.' socal 'are you on the lax 3 departure.' 'I was given that departure.' 'change frequency to XXX.xx.' in the initial socal reply, something like 'climb 13000 ft lax 3' would have clarified the situation.
