Narrative:
Departed jfk airport on routine training flight with pilot in right seat flying the aircraft. Pilot was transitioning from flight engineer to first officer. After several heading and frequency changes, traffic notifications, and step climbs was told to level at FL190 and intercept airway J-174. Acknowledged clrncs and local traffic to center and then was told to maintain heading and check altitude as readout was 19300 ft. Then noticed that altimeters were still set at local setting of 29.63 instead of 29.92. Immediately descended aircraft back to FL190 after resetting altimeters and keeping other aircraft in sight. Although both pilots were highly tasked in this environment I believed this situation would have been prevented if instructor/captain would have monitored the actions of first officer more closely. New first officer trainee was transitioning from another turboprop aircraft to larger faster jet aircraft and was behind the aircraft at times.

Title: FLC OF AN MD80 FAILED TO RESET ALTIMETERS DURING CLB THROUGH FL180 RESULTING IN ARTCC CTLR INTERVENING AND LTSS WITH A B737.
Narrative: DEPARTED JFK ARPT ON ROUTINE TRAINING FLT WITH PLT IN R SEAT FLYING THE ACFT. PLT WAS TRANSITIONING FROM FE TO FO. AFTER SEVERAL HEADING AND FREQ CHANGES, TFC NOTIFICATIONS, AND STEP CLBS WAS TOLD TO LEVEL AT FL190 AND INTERCEPT AIRWAY J-174. ACKNOWLEDGED CLRNCS AND LCL TFC TO CTR AND THEN WAS TOLD TO MAINTAIN HEADING AND CHK ALT AS READOUT WAS 19300 FT. THEN NOTICED THAT ALTIMETERS WERE STILL SET AT LCL SETTING OF 29.63 INSTEAD OF 29.92. IMMEDIATELY DSNDED ACFT BACK TO FL190 AFTER RESETTING ALTIMETERS AND KEEPING OTHER ACFT IN SIGHT. ALTHOUGH BOTH PLTS WERE HIGHLY TASKED IN THIS ENVIRONMENT I BELIEVED THIS SIT WOULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED IF INSTRUCTOR/CAPT WOULD HAVE MONITORED THE ACTIONS OF FO MORE CLOSELY. NEW FO TRAINEE WAS TRANSITIONING FROM ANOTHER TURBOPROP ACFT TO LARGER FASTER JET ACFT AND WAS BEHIND THE ACFT AT TIMES.
