Air Traffic Incident | Operational Error |
Narrative:
We were holding for a takeoff clearance (off the runway 4R). We were holding for +/-15 mins. During this time I alerted the tower (hnl tower 118.1) of our holding position. Finally we got the clearance 'taxi into position and hold.' the student in the left seat alerted me of an approaching DC10 from +/-2 mi out. After passing the holding line I questioned the clearance. The tower's response was 'make 180 degree turn stay clear of the runway.' I took the plane controls over from the student and executed the clearance. The DC10 landed. None of the pilots or flight engineer of the DC10 came over the radio. Holding again for +/- 5 mins. A new clearance was issued, 'taxi into position and hold runway 4R.' this time on short final we noticed a caravan 1/4 mi out with a cleared to land on runway 4R. Again I alerted the controller, who promptly issued a new clearance 'hold your position.' +/-7 mins later we received our clearance to take off. At the time of both incidents, heavy traffic incoming as well as outgoing was observed.

Title: HNL TWR TWICE ISSUED CLRNC ONTO THE ACTIVE RWY WITH ACFT ON SHORT FINAL TO AN INSTRUCTIONAL FLT.
Narrative: WE WERE HOLDING FOR A TKOF CLRNC (OFF THE RWY 4R). WE WERE HOLDING FOR +/-15 MINS. DURING THIS TIME I ALERTED THE TWR (HNL TWR 118.1) OF OUR HOLDING POS. FINALLY WE GOT THE CLRNC 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD.' THE STUDENT IN THE L SEAT ALERTED ME OF AN APCHING DC10 FROM +/-2 MI OUT. AFTER PASSING THE HOLDING LINE I QUESTIONED THE CLRNC. THE TWR'S RESPONSE WAS 'MAKE 180 DEG TURN STAY CLR OF THE RWY.' I TOOK THE PLANE CTLS OVER FROM THE STUDENT AND EXECUTED THE CLRNC. THE DC10 LANDED. NONE OF THE PLTS OR FE OF THE DC10 CAME OVER THE RADIO. HOLDING AGAIN FOR +/- 5 MINS. A NEW CLRNC WAS ISSUED, 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD RWY 4R.' THIS TIME ON SHORT FINAL WE NOTICED A CARAVAN 1/4 MI OUT WITH A CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 4R. AGAIN I ALERTED THE CTLR, WHO PROMPTLY ISSUED A NEW CLRNC 'HOLD YOUR POS.' +/-7 MINS LATER WE RECEIVED OUR CLRNC TO TAKE OFF. AT THE TIME OF BOTH INCIDENTS, HVY TFC INCOMING AS WELL AS OUTGOING WAS OBSERVED.
