Narrative:

On departure, pilot/crew misunderstood clearance. Believed the proper departure was heading 235 degrees till 4 NM. The clearance was supposed to be direct to VOR and then the SID. Crew discovered mistake after takeoff. Believe that if tower might have repeated initial clearance when aircraft was cleared to take off, it would have prevented this mix-up. Crew should have asked for clarification.

Title: ATX MISUNDERSTANDS ATC DEP CLRNC AT PHX RESULTING IN WRONG HDG PRIOR TO INTERCEPTING DEP SID.

Narrative: ON DEP, PLT/CREW MISUNDERSTOOD CLRNC. BELIEVED THE PROPER DEP WAS HDG 235 DEGS TILL 4 NM. THE CLRNC WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DIRECT TO VOR AND THEN THE SID. CREW DISCOVERED MISTAKE AFTER TKOF. BELIEVE THAT IF TWR MIGHT HAVE REPEATED INITIAL CLRNC WHEN ACFT WAS CLRED TO TAKE OFF, IT WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS MIX-UP. CREW SHOULD HAVE ASKED FOR CLARIFICATION.
