Narrative:

This aircraft had just been released from maintenance. Extensive airframe and avionics modification. All ground checks good prior to takeoff, and line-up checks good. After takeoff, #1 HSI heading failed. No flag. Autoplt was engaged about 2000 ft AGL. Aircraft was assigned heading 300 degrees. HSI was set. Actual heading turned out to be approximately 060 degrees as reported by ATC. Remainder of test flight completed using #2 heading and RMI. I do not know anyway that as a single pilot that I could have seen this fault during the 5 mins or so it took from takeoff roll.
