Narrative:
On the ground, we were given the clearance 'fly runway heading, cleared oveto 3 departure bce transition, climb and maintain 5000 ft.' we interpreted that to mean, fly runway heading till intercepting oveto 3. As it turned out, the controller just wanted us to fly runway heading. When we made our turn at 7 DME as depicted on the oveto 3 SID, we received a TA on our TCASII. About that time the controller asked if we were given runway heading. We indicated we were given the clearance 'fly runway heading till intercepting the oveto 3.' we were able to maintain visual contact and spacing with the other aircraft. In retrospect, we should have clarified the clearance so that there would be no doubt as to what was expected.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN AIRBUS A320 FAILED TO MAINTAIN RWY HDG DURING INITIAL DEP CLB DUE TO TURNING TO FOLLOW THE SID PROC.
Narrative: ON THE GND, WE WERE GIVEN THE CLRNC 'FLY RWY HDG, CLRED OVETO 3 DEP BCE TRANSITION, CLB AND MAINTAIN 5000 FT.' WE INTERPED THAT TO MEAN, FLY RWY HDG TILL INTERCEPTING OVETO 3. AS IT TURNED OUT, THE CTLR JUST WANTED US TO FLY RWY HDG. WHEN WE MADE OUR TURN AT 7 DME AS DEPICTED ON THE OVETO 3 SID, WE RECEIVED A TA ON OUR TCASII. ABOUT THAT TIME THE CTLR ASKED IF WE WERE GIVEN RWY HDG. WE INDICATED WE WERE GIVEN THE CLRNC 'FLY RWY HDG TILL INTERCEPTING THE OVETO 3.' WE WERE ABLE TO MAINTAIN VISUAL CONTACT AND SPACING WITH THE OTHER ACFT. IN RETROSPECT, WE SHOULD HAVE CLARIFIED THE CLRNC SO THAT THERE WOULD BE NO DOUBT AS TO WHAT WAS EXPECTED.
