Narrative:
On departure from swf, climbing out, the captain's leg, N90 told us to proceed direct to weard intersection and climb to 5000 ft. Somewhere around 4500 ft, we were given instructions to proceed to lake henry. I wasn't paying attention to the altitude and was entering lake henry in the computer. Next thing I know, I hear the altitude alert go off and we are at about 5500 ft. The captain quickly descended back to 5000 ft. There was no traffic conflict and I don't think ATC even noticed. She was busy talking to another airplane. About 1 min later, she had us contact ZBW and we changed frequencys. She had trouble picking up our transponder and had us change codes on initial departure contact with her and that may be why she didn't mention the altitude deviation or see it. I should have been more attentive monitoring the captain.
