Narrative:

Climbing out of 16400 ft, center told us to level at 16000 ft. I called descending to 16000 ft. Center said, ok climb to 17000 ft. We set the altitude bug and I went back to working on aus WX for this divert flight. At 17300 ft the altitude warning went off and first officer descended to 17000 ft after hitting 17400 ft. What happened is at 16400 ft we were inside the 700 ft altitude window, so never got the approaching altitude alarm. It had been a long day with the divert and my attention was diverted at a time when it shouldn't have.
