Narrative:
The purpose of this report is to clarify my high speed flight below 10000 ft MSL. At 17000 ft MSL during climb, the avionics smoke (red ECAM/crc) momentarily activated. ZME was notified and with their concurrence I began a descending r-hand turn back to the mem airport. At no time during this flight was there any smoke/odors noticed by the crew (a third man/line check airman was in the cockpit). As soon as this descent started, the ECAM returned and remained on for rest of flight. I told center of my intention to exceed 250 KTS below 10000 ft MSL and they approved of it. The flight landed on runway 27 and emergency vehicles met the flight. There was no apparent problem so I taxied to the gate.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN AIRBUS 310 AT 17000 FT DIVERTED AND MADE AN EMER DSCNT DUE TO AN AVIONICS SMOKE WARNING AND IN DOING SO, EXCEEDED SPD RESTR BELOW 10000 FT.
Narrative: THE PURPOSE OF THIS RPT IS TO CLARIFY MY HIGH SPD FLT BELOW 10000 FT MSL. AT 17000 FT MSL DURING CLB, THE AVIONICS SMOKE (RED ECAM/CRC) MOMENTARILY ACTIVATED. ZME WAS NOTIFIED AND WITH THEIR CONCURRENCE I BEGAN A DSNDING R-HAND TURN BACK TO THE MEM ARPT. AT NO TIME DURING THIS FLT WAS THERE ANY SMOKE/ODORS NOTICED BY THE CREW (A THIRD MAN/LINE CHK AIRMAN WAS IN THE COCKPIT). AS SOON AS THIS DSCNT STARTED, THE ECAM RETURNED AND REMAINED ON FOR REST OF FLT. I TOLD CTR OF MY INTENTION TO EXCEED 250 KTS BELOW 10000 FT MSL AND THEY APPROVED OF IT. THE FLT LANDED ON RWY 27 AND EMER VEHICLES MET THE FLT. THERE WAS NO APPARENT PROB SO I TAXIED TO THE GATE.
