Narrative:
Cable airport traffic pattern. Unicom closed. I had just left the poc (brackett airport) tower frequency for a crosswind entry to ccb airport runway 24. I like to monitor CTAF 30 mi out, but not possible from this direction due to poc tower. I fly a 'short pattern' when possible (traffic permitting) in order to stay within gliding distance of the landing runway. (That is one reason for a pattern in the first place is it not?) I called crosswind and downwind and final approach on my radio. I did not hear any xmissions from any other aircraft and did not see the C172RG until it was directly below me on short final. I went around missing the C172RG by a small margin. (I fly formation on a regular basis and we were very close.) I spoke with the pilots. Both claimed to be the PIC and both were flight instructors (CFI's). Both heard my crosswind radio call and then wondered where I was. One said 'we did fly a large pattern.' both heard me go around and then ask them for a radio check so my radio and theirs were working. Only better see and avoid eyes could have prevented this near miss. Also classic high/low wing in a CTAF traffic pattern. I just got the book 'auditing midair collisions.'

Narrative: CABLE ARPT TFC PATTERN. UNICOM CLOSED. I HAD JUST LEFT THE POC (BRACKETT ARPT) TWR FREQ FOR A XWIND ENTRY TO CCB ARPT RWY 24. I DID NOT HEAR ANY XMISSIONS FROM ANY OTHER ACFT AND DID NOT SEE THE C172RG UNTIL IT WAS DIRECTLY BELOW ME ON SHORT FINAL. I WENT AROUND MISSING THE C172RG BY A SMALL MARGIN.
