Narrative:
Flight cleared to cross runway 8L in honolulu at intersection south for taxi to runway 8R. All crew members heard and understood 'cleared to cross' with additional instructions to expedite or words to that effect as another aircraft was on final. We had almost cleared the runway when the tower controller told the aircraft on final to 'go around' followed by the comment 'you were not cleared to cross.' we were certainly all in agreement that we had been cleared to cross the runway and were surprised the other aircraft was told to go around. Admittedly the controller was very difficult to understand as he seemed to run his words together and his enunciation was virtually non-existent. Another aircraft also commented to the controller that he was difficult to understand. The first officer read back the crossing clearance and the aircraft (ours) was slow to respond since we were very heavy and only had 2 engines running. Nevertheless, I firmly believe we were cleared to cross the runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A TRI STAR FLC CROSSED AN ACTIVE RWY AND THE ACFT ON FINAL MADE A GAR AT HNL.
Narrative: FLT CLRED TO CROSS RWY 8L IN HONOLULU AT INTXN S FOR TAXI TO RWY 8R. ALL CREW MEMBERS HEARD AND UNDERSTOOD 'CLRED TO CROSS' WITH ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS TO EXPEDITE OR WORDS TO THAT EFFECT AS ANOTHER ACFT WAS ON FINAL. WE HAD ALMOST CLRED THE RWY WHEN THE TWR CTLR TOLD THE ACFT ON FINAL TO 'GAR' FOLLOWED BY THE COMMENT 'YOU WERE NOT CLRED TO CROSS.' WE WERE CERTAINLY ALL IN AGREEMENT THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO CROSS THE RWY AND WERE SURPRISED THE OTHER ACFT WAS TOLD TO GO AROUND. ADMITTEDLY THE CTLR WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND AS HE SEEMED TO RUN HIS WORDS TOGETHER AND HIS ENUNCIATION WAS VIRTUALLY NON-EXISTENT. ANOTHER ACFT ALSO COMMENTED TO THE CTLR THAT HE WAS DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND. THE FO READ BACK THE XING CLRNC AND THE ACFT (OURS) WAS SLOW TO RESPOND SINCE WE WERE VERY HVY AND ONLY HAD 2 ENGS RUNNING. NEVERTHELESS, I FIRMLY BELIEVE WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS THE RWY.
