Narrative:

I experienced vertigo while flying a new aircraft and misinterpreted the EFIS directional gyroscope and attitude heading and reference system (ahrs), which I'm not used to using. I was further distracted by a climb checklist and a heading which I didn't expect to receive. The altitude loss was +/-1000 ft. I received recent simcom training (may/xx/99) and an instrument competency check, but all this training was in a simulator and not actual IMC flight conditions. I do not have many recent IMC flight hours and was hand-flying for experience.
