Narrative:

We were leveling at FL160. Had just gotten altitude capture going through FL145 or so, when we were cleared to FL180. I changed altitude to FL180, the first officer, who was flying, pointed at 18000 ft, as procedure specifies. Then I engaged vertical navigation, although first officer was flying manually. Because we were climbing so fast on a light airplane, I don't believe we got an 'altitude capture' before FL180, and we went right through FL180, and got an altitude beep at FL183. The first officer immediately stopped the climb, but not before climbing to FL187, or so. I don't think I made the warning call at FL170. The first officer used too much vertical speed with such a shallow climb of only 2000-3000 ft. The controller did not comment at all. I should have given more attention to ensuring that the leveloff was made as cleared.

Title: B767-300 OVERSHOOTS ASSIGNED ALT AT EBUR.

Narrative: WE WERE LEVELING AT FL160. HAD JUST GOTTEN ALT CAPTURE GOING THROUGH FL145 OR SO, WHEN WE WERE CLRED TO FL180. I CHANGED ALT TO FL180, THE FO, WHO WAS FLYING, POINTED AT 18000 FT, AS PROC SPECIFIES. THEN I ENGAGED VERT NAV, ALTHOUGH FO WAS FLYING MANUALLY. BECAUSE WE WERE CLBING SO FAST ON A LIGHT AIRPLANE, I DON'T BELIEVE WE GOT AN 'ALT CAPTURE' BEFORE FL180, AND WE WENT RIGHT THROUGH FL180, AND GOT AN ALT BEEP AT FL183. THE FO IMMEDIATELY STOPPED THE CLB, BUT NOT BEFORE CLBING TO FL187, OR SO. I DON'T THINK I MADE THE WARNING CALL AT FL170. THE FO USED TOO MUCH VERT SPD WITH SUCH A SHALLOW CLB OF ONLY 2000-3000 FT. THE CTLR DID NOT COMMENT AT ALL. I SHOULD HAVE GIVEN MORE ATTN TO ENSURING THAT THE LEVELOFF WAS MADE AS CLRED.
