Narrative:

While conducting a part 91 repositioning flight from sna to san, the following occurred: we were approximately 10 mi north of san at 7000 ft MSL being vectored for a visual approach to runway 27 at san by socal approach. We had already called the airport in sight, which had been acknowledged by socal approach who had us on a 45 degree entry for a right downwind to runway 27. At this time, the pilot in the right seat inadvertently xferred our radio to communication #2 which had the san tower frequency in it. About 1 - 1 1/2 mins later, we heard the tower frequency and we realized our error. We immediately went back to communication #1, which had the socal frequency, and checked back in. The controller then gave us a vector to re-establish us on the right downwind and then cleared us for the visual to runway 27. He then handed us off to san tower and we landed. After discussing what happened, the best way we felt to avoid this would be for both pilots to pay extra attention to communication during the critical phases of flight.

Title: A CHARTER FLC FLYING AN HS125-700 INTO SAN INADVERTENTLY CHANGES RADIO FREQ RESULTING IN A TEMPORARY LOSS OF COMS.

Narrative: WHILE CONDUCTING A PART 91 REPOSITIONING FLT FROM SNA TO SAN, THE FOLLOWING OCCURRED: WE WERE APPROX 10 MI N OF SAN AT 7000 FT MSL BEING VECTORED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 27 AT SAN BY SOCAL APCH. WE HAD ALREADY CALLED THE ARPT IN SIGHT, WHICH HAD BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED BY SOCAL APCH WHO HAD US ON A 45 DEG ENTRY FOR A R DOWNWIND TO RWY 27. AT THIS TIME, THE PLT IN THE R SEAT INADVERTENTLY XFERRED OUR RADIO TO COM #2 WHICH HAD THE SAN TWR FREQ IN IT. ABOUT 1 - 1 1/2 MINS LATER, WE HEARD THE TWR FREQ AND WE REALIZED OUR ERROR. WE IMMEDIATELY WENT BACK TO COM #1, WHICH HAD THE SOCAL FREQ, AND CHKED BACK IN. THE CTLR THEN GAVE US A VECTOR TO RE-ESTABLISH US ON THE R DOWNWIND AND THEN CLRED US FOR THE VISUAL TO RWY 27. HE THEN HANDED US OFF TO SAN TWR AND WE LANDED. AFTER DISCUSSING WHAT HAPPENED, THE BEST WAY WE FELT TO AVOID THIS WOULD BE FOR BOTH PLTS TO PAY EXTRA ATTN TO COM DURING THE CRITICAL PHASES OF FLT.
