Narrative:
Approximately 50 NM from vuz in descent from 12000 ft to 10000 ft, throttles were retarded to idle. #2 engine increased power to approximately 2.2 EPR, 8000 pounds fuel, temperature 630 degrees C, N1 and N2 99%. Assumed either throttle linkage failure or zero speed protection. No response to throttle movement. Accomplished engine failure/precautionary shutdown/severe damage checklist. Requested immediate return to atl. Considering time required to complete abnormal checklist, follow up checklist, brief flight attendants and passenger, and prepare for approach, consider atl to be equal of equal time vice delaying in bhm approach control airspace. Uneventful landing. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the engine problem was caused by a failed engine throttle linkage.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727-200 IN DSCNT AT 12000 FT DECLARED AN EMER AND DIVERTED DUE TO #2 ENG GOING TO MAX CTL THRUST UNCOMMANDED CAUSED BY FAILED ENG THROTTLE LINKAGE.
Narrative: APPROX 50 NM FROM VUZ IN DSCNT FROM 12000 FT TO 10000 FT, THROTTLES WERE RETARDED TO IDLE. #2 ENG INCREASED PWR TO APPROX 2.2 EPR, 8000 LBS FUEL, TEMP 630 DEGS C, N1 AND N2 99%. ASSUMED EITHER THROTTLE LINKAGE FAILURE OR ZERO SPD PROTECTION. NO RESPONSE TO THROTTLE MOVEMENT. ACCOMPLISHED ENG FAILURE/PRECAUTIONARY SHUTDOWN/SEVERE DAMAGE CHKLIST. REQUESTED IMMEDIATE RETURN TO ATL. CONSIDERING TIME REQUIRED TO COMPLETE ABNORMAL CHKLIST, FOLLOW UP CHKLIST, BRIEF FLT ATTENDANTS AND PAX, AND PREPARE FOR APCH, CONSIDER ATL TO BE EQUAL OF EQUAL TIME VICE DELAYING IN BHM APCH CTL AIRSPACE. UNEVENTFUL LNDG. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG PROB WAS CAUSED BY A FAILED ENG THROTTLE LINKAGE.
