Air Traffic Incident | Operational Error |
Narrative:
A line of numerous thunderstorms were in an e-w line about 30-40 NM south of atlanta. We (X) were on an IFR flight plan from north, through atl and south through seminole (szw) VOR. We were cleared to deviate 'as necessary, direct szw when able.' we deviated east of atl and were just clearing the line of storms after having turned right to a southwesterly heading. ZTL instructed us to 'turn left 090 degrees.' we were unable due to a near thunderstorm cell in that direction. We stated that and said we could fly 180 degrees. Center concurred and said to turn immediately for traffic, we did. Concurrently, we noted TCASII traffic at 1-2 O'clock position inside 10 mi. This rapidly changed to a TA. Center had been attempting to contact the air carrier Y flight in conflict with us. Center finally established contact with air carrier Y and told them to turn left to 360 degrees immediately. We then got an RA with a 'climb' command. We initiated a climb and got to FL333 and received TCASII 'clear of traffic.' air carrier Y reported they had complied with a TCASII 'descend' RA themselves. TCASII showed closest distance at 3-4 mi. Center then handed us off to a different sector and said nothing about the incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD88 FLC INITIATES TCASII EVASIVE ACTION MANEUVER DUE TO SAME ALT CONFLICTING TFC WHEN DEVIATING AROUND WX.
Narrative: A LINE OF NUMEROUS TSTMS WERE IN AN E-W LINE ABOUT 30-40 NM S OF ATLANTA. WE (X) WERE ON AN IFR FLT PLAN FROM N, THROUGH ATL AND S THROUGH SEMINOLE (SZW) VOR. WE WERE CLRED TO DEVIATE 'AS NECESSARY, DIRECT SZW WHEN ABLE.' WE DEVIATED E OF ATL AND WERE JUST CLRING THE LINE OF STORMS AFTER HAVING TURNED R TO A SOUTHWESTERLY HEADING. ZTL INSTRUCTED US TO 'TURN L 090 DEGS.' WE WERE UNABLE DUE TO A NEAR TSTM CELL IN THAT DIRECTION. WE STATED THAT AND SAID WE COULD FLY 180 DEGS. CTR CONCURRED AND SAID TO TURN IMMEDIATELY FOR TFC, WE DID. CONCURRENTLY, WE NOTED TCASII TFC AT 1-2 O'CLOCK POS INSIDE 10 MI. THIS RAPIDLY CHANGED TO A TA. CTR HAD BEEN ATTEMPTING TO CONTACT THE ACR Y FLT IN CONFLICT WITH US. CTR FINALLY ESTABLISHED CONTACT WITH ACR Y AND TOLD THEM TO TURN L TO 360 DEGS IMMEDIATELY. WE THEN GOT AN RA WITH A 'CLB' COMMAND. WE INITIATED A CLB AND GOT TO FL333 AND RECEIVED TCASII 'CLR OF TFC.' ACR Y RPTED THEY HAD COMPLIED WITH A TCASII 'DSND' RA THEMSELVES. TCASII SHOWED CLOSEST DISTANCE AT 3-4 MI. CTR THEN HANDED US OFF TO A DIFFERENT SECTOR AND SAID NOTHING ABOUT THE INCIDENT.
