Narrative:
Approximately 5 mins after takeoff, heard a loud 'bang.' left engine spooled down. Requested return to airport (iah) and emergency equipment. Briefed flight attendants, completed appropriate checklists. Landed overweight (approximately 1500 pounds). Landing was smooth and normal. After emergency personnel looked aircraft over, and reported no problems (except #2 main gear tire deflated -- fuse plug melted), was towed to gate. My sincere compliments to my first officer, flight attendants, and iah personnel for a job well done!
