Narrative:
While taxiing to runway 17R out of gate at sdf, I unintentionally taxied on runway 17R. When I noticed I was on the runway, I had my first officer tell the tower we were on the active runway. This happened while the first officer was calling out the takeoff vref numbers. I was looking in and out of the cockpit. This is when I saw the red runway marker. I did not notice the arrow next to runway 17R. The arrow pointed to the taxiway I took, taxiway G. This was what disoriented me. The problem was that the sign was not parallel with the runway, which is what I am normally used to. The sign was more parallel to taxiway G. What should have been a simple taxi to the end of the runway, somehow turned into a runway incursion. I think the sign should be to the left (south) of taxiway G and parallel to runway 35L/17R.

Title: A B737-300 PIC TAXIES HIS ACFT ONTO RWY 17R VIA TXWY G INSTEAD OF TURNING AT TXWY B AT SDF, KY.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 17R OUT OF GATE AT SDF, I UNINTENTIONALLY TAXIED ON RWY 17R. WHEN I NOTICED I WAS ON THE RWY, I HAD MY FO TELL THE TWR WE WERE ON THE ACTIVE RWY. THIS HAPPENED WHILE THE FO WAS CALLING OUT THE TKOF VREF NUMBERS. I WAS LOOKING IN AND OUT OF THE COCKPIT. THIS IS WHEN I SAW THE RED RWY MARKER. I DID NOT NOTICE THE ARROW NEXT TO RWY 17R. THE ARROW POINTED TO THE TXWY I TOOK, TXWY G. THIS WAS WHAT DISORIENTED ME. THE PROB WAS THAT THE SIGN WAS NOT PARALLEL WITH THE RWY, WHICH IS WHAT I AM NORMALLY USED TO. THE SIGN WAS MORE PARALLEL TO TXWY G. WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SIMPLE TAXI TO THE END OF THE RWY, SOMEHOW TURNED INTO A RWY INCURSION. I THINK THE SIGN SHOULD BE TO THE L (S) OF TXWY G AND PARALLEL TO RWY 35L/17R.
