Narrative:
Clear, beautiful afternoon in syracuse, ny. We were cleared for the visual to runway 28. On short final (approximately 200 ft AGL on a standard 3 degree GS) we saw a P51 mustang flash across our nose as he was turning and pulling out of a dive to set up for a pass down runway 33 as part of an aerial demonstration for the local airshow. We knew an airshow was in progress, however, tower made no calls to expect any traffic and we did not hear them talk to the P51. No evasive maneuver was necessary and we continued our approach to an uneventful landing. After landing and talking to tower, we found out that the P51 pilot was also unaware of our approach. Apparently the 'air boss' controling the P51 at the airshow was not communicating/coordinating, etc with the field tower and separate frequencys were being used. Supplemental information from acn 448955: air carrier did a slight 'duck-under' on the GS, leveling at about 100 ft AGL until crossing runway 28 threshold to land.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A LNDG B727 HAS A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH A P51 MAKING A XING PASS OVER ANOTHER RWY AT 200 FT AGL AT SYR, NY.
Narrative: CLR, BEAUTIFUL AFTERNOON IN SYRACUSE, NY. WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL TO RWY 28. ON SHORT FINAL (APPROX 200 FT AGL ON A STANDARD 3 DEG GS) WE SAW A P51 MUSTANG FLASH ACROSS OUR NOSE AS HE WAS TURNING AND PULLING OUT OF A DIVE TO SET UP FOR A PASS DOWN RWY 33 AS PART OF AN AERIAL DEMO FOR THE LCL AIRSHOW. WE KNEW AN AIRSHOW WAS IN PROGRESS, HOWEVER, TWR MADE NO CALLS TO EXPECT ANY TFC AND WE DID NOT HEAR THEM TALK TO THE P51. NO EVASIVE MANEUVER WAS NECESSARY AND WE CONTINUED OUR APCH TO AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. AFTER LNDG AND TALKING TO TWR, WE FOUND OUT THAT THE P51 PLT WAS ALSO UNAWARE OF OUR APCH. APPARENTLY THE 'AIR BOSS' CTLING THE P51 AT THE AIRSHOW WAS NOT COMMUNICATING/COORDINATING, ETC WITH THE FIELD TWR AND SEPARATE FREQS WERE BEING USED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 448955: ACR DID A SLIGHT 'DUCK-UNDER' ON THE GS, LEVELING AT ABOUT 100 FT AGL UNTIL XING RWY 28 THRESHOLD TO LAND.
