Narrative:
Both crew members misread/misunderstood clearance to read 'direct pdz VOR.' actual clearance was 'left turn direct pdz VOR.' as a result, runway heading was maintained until queried by socal departure at 2000-3000 ft. Crew anticipated vector or direction to turn from tower or departure control. On arrival at aircraft, it was loaded, secured and ready for departure. During cockpit preparation, load supervisor entered cockpit and requested expeditious departure. While we didn't feel rushed, it is evident that some attention to detail and xchks were missed. The key is to maintain flows and habit patterns. No checklist or aircraft operating (inspection, security, start) procedures were missed but we missed a detail within a normal procedure. If you feel rushed or want to hurry -- don't, normal is the key.

Title: AN ACR FREIGHTER CREW FLIES RWY HDG DEP ONT WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE TURNED L DIRECT TO PDZ, CA.
Narrative: BOTH CREW MEMBERS MISREAD/MISUNDERSTOOD CLRNC TO READ 'DIRECT PDZ VOR.' ACTUAL CLRNC WAS 'L TURN DIRECT PDZ VOR.' AS A RESULT, RWY HDG WAS MAINTAINED UNTIL QUERIED BY SOCAL DEP AT 2000-3000 FT. CREW ANTICIPATED VECTOR OR DIRECTION TO TURN FROM TWR OR DEP CTL. ON ARR AT ACFT, IT WAS LOADED, SECURED AND READY FOR DEP. DURING COCKPIT PREPARATION, LOAD SUPVR ENTERED COCKPIT AND REQUESTED EXPEDITIOUS DEP. WHILE WE DIDN'T FEEL RUSHED, IT IS EVIDENT THAT SOME ATTN TO DETAIL AND XCHKS WERE MISSED. THE KEY IS TO MAINTAIN FLOWS AND HABIT PATTERNS. NO CHKLIST OR ACFT OPERATING (INSPECTION, SECURITY, START) PROCS WERE MISSED BUT WE MISSED A DETAIL WITHIN A NORMAL PROC. IF YOU FEEL RUSHED OR WANT TO HURRY -- DON'T, NORMAL IS THE KEY.
