Narrative:
Aircraft was cleared to climb to FL290. First officer called 'FL280 for FL290.' autoplt pitched nose down. Captain was flying and ordered flight engineer and first officer to check log for autoplt write-ups. Captain proceeded to climb aircraft to FL297 before realizing he was supposed to be at FL290. He immediately descended to FL290. Captain believes altitude deviation caused by his inattn and stupidity. Support (flight engineer and first officer) ahd been ordered to 'check books' for previous autoplt write-ups and therefore, were out of loop.
