Narrative:
Heavy weight (118000 pounds) full EPR takeoff runway 21C at dtw. Passing 800 ft AGL (1400 ft MSL), the left engine fire handle light illuminated and the fire bell sounded. The left throttle was retarded and at around 70% N1 the fire light went out. (Left throttle was left at 70% N1 until it was retarded on landing.) emergency was declared with dtw approach. Checklists completed and cabin prepared for possible evacuate/evacuation due to the overweight landing. Single engine approach and uneventful landing on runway 21R followed by taxi to the gate after the emergency was terminated. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the engine was a P&west JT8D-17 and the fire warning was caused by a cracked 13TH stage high pressure tube supplying bleed air to the fuel heater. The reporter said the tube cracked at the point where it attaches to the engine case.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DC9-50 ON TKOF AT 800 FT AGL DECLARED AN EMER AND RETURNED TO THE FIELD DUE TO FIRE WARNING #1 ENG CAUSED BY A BROKEN PNEUMATIC TUBE.
Narrative: HVY WT (118000 LBS) FULL EPR TKOF RWY 21C AT DTW. PASSING 800 FT AGL (1400 FT MSL), THE L ENG FIRE HANDLE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE FIRE BELL SOUNDED. THE L THROTTLE WAS RETARDED AND AT AROUND 70% N1 THE FIRE LIGHT WENT OUT. (L THROTTLE WAS LEFT AT 70% N1 UNTIL IT WAS RETARDED ON LNDG.) EMER WAS DECLARED WITH DTW APCH. CHKLISTS COMPLETED AND CABIN PREPARED FOR POSSIBLE EVAC DUE TO THE OVERWT LNDG. SINGLE ENG APCH AND UNEVENTFUL LNDG ON RWY 21R FOLLOWED BY TAXI TO THE GATE AFTER THE EMER WAS TERMINATED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ENG WAS A P&W JT8D-17 AND THE FIRE WARNING WAS CAUSED BY A CRACKED 13TH STAGE HIGH PRESSURE TUBE SUPPLYING BLEED AIR TO THE FUEL HEATER. THE RPTR SAID THE TUBE CRACKED AT THE POINT WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE ENG CASE.
