Narrative:
En route to eyw from mco at cruise flight, 15000 ft, approximately 55 NM north of eyw in VMC conditions we experienced an engine failure on the #1 engine. First officer the PF at this time, and I, the PNF, verified the appropriate engine which failed and proceeded with the engine shutdown checklist for that engine. At this time, engine secured, we declared an emergency with mia center and requested a diversion to rsw which was promptly approved. We then completed the entire precautionary engine shutdown checklist as per our flight standards manual. Once complete I notified the flight attendant of our situation and gave her all the specific details she would need to know, eg, what happened, what we did, where we were now going and time. I also at this time made a PA and explained to our passenger our diversion, etc. Once complete, a positive xfer of controls was given to me, as PIC -- I was now the PF. Appropriate stations were notified along with our flight dispatcher. We made an uneventful approach and landing in rsw and with the airplane under complete control taxied to our gate. Passenger deplaned normally.
