Narrative:
Departed in VMC. Climbing through 3000 ft a burning smell was detected in the aircraft. The smell was very strong and getting stronger as the aircraft climbed. I decided a return to the field was required as a burning smell was detected on the aircraft. An emergency was declared with ATC; the aircraft was maneuvered to land; and the fire trucks were in position at the time of touchdown. The aircraft was evaluated and found ok to return to the gate. Passenger were deplaned; informed of all operations; and given updates every 45 mins or more frequently. The aircraft was inspected by the fire department officials and maintenance. Evidence of a bird ingestion was found in the #1 engine. After a delay; the aircraft was refueled; passenger bags were removed (several passenger did not reboard); the aircraft logbook was signed off by maintenance; and the flight departed again; arriving 4 hours behind schedule.
