Narrative:
On descent into dtw, approximately 12000 ft, 250 KTS, 40 mi northwest of dtw, flight attendant came to cockpit and informed 'smoke in cabin' with sense of urgency. Captain instructed first officer to go back to cabin and check it out. First officer observed smoke/vapor throughout cabin from top to bottom, visibility somewhat obscured, and some unidentifiable odor. First officer returned to cockpit, informed captain of findings. Aircraft was proceeding/expediting direct xyz, 38 mi out, 11000 ft. First officer asked for lower, ATC idented flight XXX as emergency and asked souls/fuel onboard. Flight attendant informed cockpit vapor/smoke remained and thought 'electrical' smell. Did checklist per smoke/fume. Cabin fans turned off, smoke later dissipated. Vector 12 mi final. Emergency equipment met aircraft. Uneventful landing. Source of vapor/smoke unknown.
