Narrative:
Aircraft was cleared to phx on rno departure. At 9000 ft, aircraft was turned to intercept J92 over fmg VORTAC -- instead of maintaining heading and waiting for radar vectors to intercept J92. Sensitivity to mountainous terrain notwithstanding, I somehow got it into my thought I was supposed to intercept J92 over fmg. When queried by the controller, I asked for a heading and was assigned a 120 degree heading to intercept J92 south of fmg VORTAC. The flight proceeded uneventfully to phx.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A FLC LEFT THE ASSIGNED DEP AND PROCEEDED TO THE RNO VOR WITHOUT CLRNC OVER MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN.
Narrative: ACFT WAS CLRED TO PHX ON RNO DEP. AT 9000 FT, ACFT WAS TURNED TO INTERCEPT J92 OVER FMG VORTAC -- INSTEAD OF MAINTAINING HDG AND WAITING FOR RADAR VECTORS TO INTERCEPT J92. SENSITIVITY TO MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN NOTWITHSTANDING, I SOMEHOW GOT IT INTO MY THOUGHT I WAS SUPPOSED TO INTERCEPT J92 OVER FMG. WHEN QUERIED BY THE CTLR, I ASKED FOR A HDG AND WAS ASSIGNED A 120 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT J92 S OF FMG VORTAC. THE FLT PROCEEDED UNEVENTFULLY TO PHX.
