Narrative:
Obtained pushback clearance from ramp to push back to spot xx on taxiway M. After push, we contacted lga ground and were advised that we had to get clearance from ground control to push onto taxiway M. We were doing multiple tasks at the time: getting a takeoff alternate, pushing, running checks, etc, in poor visibility at night. Supplemental information from acn 452258: visibility was very poor and we were busy coordinating with dispatch for a takeoff alternate. There is a note on our airport information chart that mentioned this, but we both missed it due to workload.
