Narrative:
On touchdown, ATC tower advised us that one of our main landing gear wheels had come off our aircraft (right main gear, left inboard tire and rim). Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated maintenance advised that 2 axle nuts exist for these axles and the wrong one was installed when the wheel and tire assembly was replaced. The reporter said the difference is most likely the aircraft with the greater gross weight will use a heavier axle.

Title: A DC9-10 ON LNDG ROLLOUT ACFT LOST INBOARD TIRE AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY FROM THE R MAIN GEAR CAUSED BY IMPROPER INSTALLATION.
Narrative: ON TOUCHDOWN, ATC TWR ADVISED US THAT ONE OF OUR MAIN LNDG GEAR WHEELS HAD COME OFF OUR ACFT (R MAIN GEAR, L INBOARD TIRE AND RIM). CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED MAINT ADVISED THAT 2 AXLE NUTS EXIST FOR THESE AXLES AND THE WRONG ONE WAS INSTALLED WHEN THE WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY WAS REPLACED. THE RPTR SAID THE DIFFERENCE IS MOST LIKELY THE ACFT WITH THE GREATER GROSS WT WILL USE A HEAVIER AXLE.
