Narrative:
On check-in with ZLA, we were cleared in 1 transmission to FL230, then cross 40 NM west of pgs at 10000 ft 250 KTS and altimeter 30.19. We read it back exactly. Descending through 11000 ft, we were told to climb back to 12000 ft as cleared. We did so, but said we had read back 10000 ft and it was acknowledged by ATC. He said no harm. No foul. If the controller's first transmission had not been so extensive we may have caught the misunderstanding.

Title: AN MDS80 CREW SUBMITTED RPTS DESCRIBING A HEARBACK READBACK INCIDENT WITH ZLA, WHICH RESULTED IN AN ALT BUST.
Narrative: ON CHK-IN WITH ZLA, WE WERE CLRED IN 1 XMISSION TO FL230, THEN CROSS 40 NM W OF PGS AT 10000 FT 250 KTS AND ALTIMETER 30.19. WE READ IT BACK EXACTLY. DSNDING THROUGH 11000 FT, WE WERE TOLD TO CLB BACK TO 12000 FT AS CLRED. WE DID SO, BUT SAID WE HAD READ BACK 10000 FT AND IT WAS ACKNOWLEDGED BY ATC. HE SAID NO HARM. NO FOUL. IF THE CTLR'S FIRST XMISSION HAD NOT BEEN SO EXTENSIVE WE MAY HAVE CAUGHT THE MISUNDERSTANDING.
