Narrative:
Another chapter of interrupting your habit pattern and letting something slip through the cracks. While on a visual approach (copilot flying) we could not get the ILS to tune or display. I kept trying to get the ILS to work by changing frequencys, turning the flight director on and off, reselecting the 'approach' button and we evidently missed the frequency change to tower. We landed while still on approach control frequency. The runway was clear and no one was in front of us so it all looked quite normal. (We never got the ILS to work.) supplemental information from acn 453267: during this period we arrived inside the OM and turned our attention to the landing. With no one ahead of us and the runway clear and our habit pattern broken we missed the switch to tower. It is normal for atl tower to have cleared us by now so a lack of any further communication did not seem out of the ordinary.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 CREW LANDED WITHOUT LNDG CLRNC.
Narrative: ANOTHER CHAPTER OF INTERRUPTING YOUR HABIT PATTERN AND LETTING SOMETHING SLIP THROUGH THE CRACKS. WHILE ON A VISUAL APCH (COPLT FLYING) WE COULD NOT GET THE ILS TO TUNE OR DISPLAY. I KEPT TRYING TO GET THE ILS TO WORK BY CHANGING FREQS, TURNING THE FLT DIRECTOR ON AND OFF, RESELECTING THE 'APCH' BUTTON AND WE EVIDENTLY MISSED THE FREQ CHANGE TO TWR. WE LANDED WHILE STILL ON APCH CTL FREQ. THE RWY WAS CLR AND NO ONE WAS IN FRONT OF US SO IT ALL LOOKED QUITE NORMAL. (WE NEVER GOT THE ILS TO WORK.) SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 453267: DURING THIS PERIOD WE ARRIVED INSIDE THE OM AND TURNED OUR ATTN TO THE LNDG. WITH NO ONE AHEAD OF US AND THE RWY CLR AND OUR HABIT PATTERN BROKEN WE MISSED THE SWITCH TO TWR. IT IS NORMAL FOR ATL TWR TO HAVE CLRED US BY NOW SO A LACK OF ANY FURTHER COM DID NOT SEEM OUT OF THE ORDINARY.
